After months of preparation, we are on our way to Spain tomorrow. We fly to Charlotte, Madrid, Pamplona, and then take a bus to St. Jean Pied de Port (On the border of Spain/France). After a day of jet lag recovery, we will start our Camino adventure on Wednesday.
The advice is to not have your backpack weigh more than 10% of your body weight. I’m not sure if that is supposed to include the weight of your pack itself, or the weight of the water you’ll carry, but mine weighs about 15 pounds. It’s more than the 10% rule, but there’s just simply not anything I want to leave behind.
Here’s the contents of my backpack:
sun hat, rain jacket (with hood), fleece jacket, sleepwear, gloves, 1 pair of shorts, 2 pairs of hiking pants (one which can zip off into shorts), 2 short sleeved shirts, 1 long sleeve shirt, socks (2 pairs of liner socks and 3 pairs of wool hiking socks), underwear, shoes (Ahnu brand – light hiking shoes), sandals (Teva), water bladder, microfiber towel, sleep sack, Buff, headlamp, sunglasses, Osprey backpack and waterproof cover, electronics (phone, charger, converter, battery pack), guidebook (yes, I know I could download one online, but I do love a good paper map, and it’s my only place to take notes), toiletries, first aid kit (bandaids, blister bandages, Advil…), Wizzy Wipes (google them), waist pack for money and passport, small/light day pack, and a few other misc. items. Oh yes, I’m taking a swimsuit and goggles (just in case, you know).
Here’s what’s NOT in my pack: makeup, deodorant, hair dryer, flat iron, jewelry, “cute” clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, rain poncho….
When we get to St. Jean, I will purchase some treking poles (rumor has it that TSA sometimes will not allow them to go through as a carry on), a Swiss Army knife, and some snacks.
I hope to post daily – assuming that the hostel has wifi. And while I’m not bringing a professional camera, I’m counting on my trusy iphone camera to capture some of our adventure.
A big, huge thanks to my sweet husband who doesn’t share my wanderlust, but who supports me in this journey. He and Tucker Boone and Hank will be holding down the fort in my absence – no doubt “baching” it and watching football for hours on end.
Adios for now…
